Building an Early Childhood Education Center
Kou Kou Village at Papua New Guinea
Our first school is fully funded but we don’t want to stop at just one! We’re already in the process of taking the steps in opening a second school in Kou Kou! We will need another $100,000 to complete the project. We’re excited to begin paving the way!

About Kou Kou Preschool

Operating from the local community hall in Kou Kou Village in remote Oro Province, Kou Kou Preschool is the first step on the journey of lifelong learning for children as young as 3 and up to 5. It is one of the only pre-schools (early childhood) in Oro Province. Here Gwen Harika, a dedicated KTF funded teacher, with a passion for growing little minds, teaches children from Kou Kou 1, Kou Kou 2 and, due to the school’s good reputation in the broader community, even as far as neighbouring Kokoda Station, a 20-minute walk away.
Gwen undertook her teacher training with KTF in 2012 and taught at the local Kokoda Elementary School; for love as a volunteer, because government funding was not available to cover her position. She transferred to Kou Kou Preschool when KTF’s founding teacher, Molly, sadly passed away, and has proudly taken on the mantle of shaping these young minds at their most formative stages of development. She walks in from her home village each day, a 30-minute trip that would take most of us an hour each way.
Because there is not a dedicated building, the school is currently run from the local community hall (built by KTF and a group of volunteers in 2011) and classes as such vie with competing community activities for space. When the shared place is needed for important community activities and meetings, classes are often cancelled. The shared space means it is also not purpose-fit for important elements that promote young learning – including low desks, sand pits and play areas that are recommended for best practice ECE.
The addition of a new double classroom, purpose built for ECE, would house Gwen and the children she teaches, and allow expansion of the program to enable double the children to start their life-changing education. It will provide a transformative opportunity for young children across the region, setting them on a pathway for success into formal primary schooling.
Thank you!
